Pointing out problems can be very leader like.
However, being gruff and unapproachable is often not seen as 'leader-like'.

Plus, you have mentioned that you do not like being in meetings. As team leader, I would expect that your Commander would expect you to attend even more meetings as before. Think of this as a boon to continue working hard in the streets.

And please remind me whether or not you have had team leader experience? As a former Commander, I would definitely pick someone who had previous experience, while mentoring those who did not. Perhaps you should talk to your Commander about acquiring those skillsets if you do not have them as of yet?
