I Fail to Advance

It is no news to those of us in Clan Nettobuku that Bunmei is very busy lately, trying to move from his current home in a faraway village to a place nearer to the castle.

When I first joined Clan Nettobuku, Bunmei was the lead ninja among the city fighters. Recently, Jimon joined us as a third ninja.

Commander Kobushi just informed me that, since Bunmei is so busy, he has had to step down as lead ninja, and Jimon has taken his place. Apparently Jimon has prior experience leading teams.

It has probably not helped that I have been somewhat gruff and unapproachable while working, and I have not been shy about pointing out problems. I point them out so that we might fix them, but I am afraid this has been perceived as not very leader-like.

I am displeased, with myself as well as with the clan.

Often the ninjas that are the best at the silent arts are seen as invaluable in sorties rather than managing other ninjas. I've seen a lot of very stealthy people have to wait a fair bit for that first step up because they were just so good at silent killing. Ironic, but sometimes the worse ninjas get the leadership roles.

But you seem contemplative enough with your haiku and floral arrangements to learn and grow from this experience. I know that you will sharpen your ninja-to and shuriken and be better. Your clan will not fail reward an assassin of your caliber. And at least you have all your pinkies!

Of course they might have planned this in advanced and hired Jimon specifically to be a team leader.

Pointing out problems can be very leader like.
However, being gruff and unapproachable is often not seen as 'leader-like'.

Plus, you have mentioned that you do not like being in meetings. As team leader, I would expect that your Commander would expect you to attend even more meetings as before. Think of this as a boon to continue working hard in the streets.

And please remind me whether or not you have had team leader experience? As a former Commander, I would definitely pick someone who had previous experience, while mentoring those who did not. Perhaps you should talk to your Commander about acquiring those skillsets if you do not have them as of yet?

Some are meant for leadership, others meant for the fighting in the streets. You've made it clear before you much prefer the latter. Perhaps that is part of their decision, that you serve better where you are.
